Here we go again, Tuesday, 18th September 2012. Another overnight on the train. The sleeper was a little better, wider with a loo and sink. I got up 5.18 am went all the way through the dining car to find a general population loo, which stank by the way. I think someone missed in the night. Then I came back through the dining car to the end of our carriage to the shower. The shower had no hot water, perhaps it was too early - the attendant was still in her pit. Anyway rather get it done whilst few people are about. The night before last I got up at 5.15 am on the Denver/Chicago overnight so today I got a 3 minute lay-in. Breakfast is at 6.30 so I am ready. We get off the train at 9 am at Buffalo, NY state, then board a coach to the Sheridan at the falls Hotel, NY. We only get the rest of the day, one night and morning of the 19th to see Niagara Falls then we will be on the last leg of our journey, which is 3 nights stay in New York. Pam booked us on the 6pm Ground Zero tour so we will meet them and have dinner with them afterwards. For the moment I am looking forward to seeing Niagara.
Tuesday 18th September 2012 at 9.05 am our Lake Shore sleeper train pulled into Buffalo. We jumped on a coach to travel the half an hour journey to Niagara. As it was early none of our rooms were ready. However a woman was in the lobby doing the hard sell on tours of the falls. Nick told us to put luggage and overnight bags in a board room, where he could watch them, so we could go and see the sights. Alan and I decided to do what lots of the others were doing and go on the trip the woman was selling. It turned out to be useful; we could never have done all the sights they took us round in the 4 hours of the trip. We visited: Cave of the Winds, Horseshoe, America and Bridal Veil Falls, Goat Island, Terrapin and Prospect Points. We were able to walk on all the board ways, including the high Hurricane level and ride on the Maid of the Mist Boat Trip. They gave us yellow capes for the Hurricane board walks, blue capes for the boat ride and sandals. It was all set up really well, but by the end we were so tired.
We got back to the Sharaton at the falls, NY hotel and still had to wait a few minutes for a room key.
Eventually, we were taken to room 244. Pam and Gerard are in room 217 and we are meeting them to walk over to Canada at 7 pm; they went off for a swim and we went to rest, tidy up and do some washing.
We have just seen Niagaria Falls. Another wow moment of the trip. The water
thunders down and the boat gets frighteningly close before it turns back. There
are 3 massive waterfalls and we walked down to all the ledges and up to the
hurricane boards. We got soaking wet. The tour we went on took 4 hours as soon
as we arrived off the sleeper at noon. We were all shattered, but went on the
tour rather than wait around until 3 pm for rooms to be cleaned/ready.
